Around fifty vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say initial examinations indicate the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for details.
A senior political figure said the incident rendered him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
